Ghulam Mustafa (on Study Leave)

Biography

Ghulam Mustafa is a Lecturer in the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of Emerging Sciences and Technology, at Aror University of Art, Architecture, Design and Heritage, Sukkur. He is currently on study leave and pursuing a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Bologna, Italy. His doctoral research focuses on machine learning, scientific data analysis, and gamma-ray astrophysics. He contributes to research associated with NASA’s Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) mission, a space-based gamma-ray telescope designed to investigate astrophysical sources in the MeV energy range. His work includes gamma-ray burst detection and localization, Compton event reconstruction, detector simulations, background modeling, light-curve analysis, event selection, and the development of scientific data-analysis pipelines using the cosipy framework. A central component of his research is the computation and analysis of the Angular Resolution Measure (ARM), which is used to evaluate the directional accuracy and imaging performance of Compton telescopes. He also investigates machine-learning methods for transient detection, source localization, and background estimation using simulated and observational gamma-ray data. In addition to his doctoral research, he has served as a Machine Learning Laboratory Instructor at Bologna Business School, where he supervised practical sessions, programming exercises, and applied machine-learning projects. From September to November 2026, he will undertake a research mobility period at the Institute of Physics, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany. During this period, he will focus on advanced machine-learning methods for transient detection and localization for the COSI mission. He received his Master’s degree in Computer and Electronic Convergence Engineering from Sun Moon University, South Korea, and his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology, Pakistan. He also participated in an international exchange program at Karabük University, Türkiye. His research interests include machine learning, deep learning, gamma-ray astrophysics, gamma-ray burst detection and localization, Compton telescope data analysis, scientific computing, computer vision, object detection, and intelligent transportation systems.
